I know. Another fantastic title from Rude. I take a bow. You applaud. Ahem. Anyways…
The already pretty sweet Design by Humans have redesigned their website. I think this was really what was supposed to be ready by January 6th but it was worth the wait. I liked the simplicity of the old site and also how the t-shirts and the designs were prominent on the page. After all they are the most important thing on the site. Well, they took that idea and turbocharged it. It is simpler and the design and t-shirt images are even larger and more prominent than before. The home page just blew me away. It is a great way to display the latest design. From a business point of view it is not the best idea. They definitely should display more of what the sell on the first page but from a design point of view it is great. Perhaps they have become so well known that they are not worried that people might not browse the their store.
The shop pages have been dramatically changed t0o and it looks like what would happen if UT and American Apparel mated. It’s pretty cool and it is a great way to see what the t-shirt really looks like but I think they need to hire a few more models.
The shop page is fantastic too. On each page the first image you see will include both the male and female model which is great when you consider that the shirt styles and sometimes even color can be different.
Overall, I have nothing bad to say about the site redesign. A forum has also been added and there are probably a few other key features that you can find out here but be sure to click on the design images for different angles and the magnifying glass is pretty cool too.
Another cool thing is the sorting of designs. You can easily find what designs you voted for and which of them were or were not printed. Only 8 of the 124 designs I have voted for have been printed. Although some of the designs that I voted for I don’t remember and I don’t think I would vote for them now. This next design I voted for received a total of just 5 votes.
This next design has the most votes for designs I voted for but which haven’t been printed. It has 378 votes.
GREAT write up! Thank you so much for the kind words.
We really wanted to re-focus the home page design back on the art and the artist. The artwork on these tees is amazing and we just were not doing the artists justice with the old site design. From any product page you can click on the date the shirt won and you can see a home page art view of that design we have some amazing folks at DBH who created custom backgrounds for every tee we have printed, so be sure to check out the various views. You can also browse past home pages by clicking the left arrow (we are redesigning these arrows on the home page to be easier to see and use, they tend to get lost in the background design).
Tom V. retook over 9000 photos in a little over a month for every product on the site, we are still sorting and finding a few of the photos, so there are still some products missing from the store (not to many).
We wanted a high contrast minimalist feel so the artwork would be very impactful and memorable. We hope everyone gets in the habit of returning to see the home page each day to get inspired and drop the artist of the day a quick note.
We have many many more changes we are making, but we kept everyone waiting long enough.
Thanks for the comment. It is always great to hear directly from the t-shirt stores. I think that you have successfully achieved what you set out to do and you somehow managed to maintain your identity while shedding the web 2.0 stylings. We are looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
i want the original gangster shirt, how much?
Don’t think it was ever printed by Design by Humans.
